REPORTS TO: Fugees Academy Administrators:
Fugees Family, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization devoted to working with child survivors of war. We build upon the power of soccer to galvanize these kids by giving them the support and structure they need to realize their vast potential. Five years ago, Coach Luma Mufleh started a Fugees team to provide refugee boys with free access to organized soccer. Since then, our programming has grown to include year-round soccer for 86 boys aged 10-18, after-school tutoring, a private middle school academy, and an academic enrichment camp.
The Fugees Family provides a space for the kids to heal and meet others like them, from different countries, who have been through similar experiences. Africans and Asians, Northern and Southern Sudanese, Muslims and Christians, Sunni and Shia Muslims - they all play on the same team, finding their commonalities instead of focusing on their differences. Their bonds make them more secure in their own identity and more capable of acclimating to the mainstream.
The Fugees Family works to afford our kids equal access to the educational opportunities others in their age group have, helping them to acquire the social and academic skills necessary to succeed. Most of the students are ESOL students who have been placed in age-appropriate classrooms upon arrival in the United States. However, for many of them this is their first experience in a structured educational system. Understandably, many of our students struggle to catch up to grade level and to succeed in their public school classrooms.
In 2007, in response to a growing need among our boys for more intensive language and literacy support than could be provided at tutoring alone, we started the Fugees Academy: an independent middle school program for players who demonstrated the desire to learn and the discipline to succeed. The Fugees Academy provides high-quality middle school education focused on helping students acquire the English and basic academic skills necessary to succeed in a college-prep high school environment. The key to the Fugees Academy is a focus on language enrichment and an emphasis on English literacy, as demonstrated through reading, writing, speaking, and listening.
The students in the Fugees Academy are refugee boys participating in the Fugees Soccer program. Through small class sizes and attentive, expert teachers, the Fugees Academy ensures that each student is learning to the best of his ability. Each student learns math, English, social studies, and science each day. Each student is expected to complete up to 2 hours of homework each night.
Current we have 12 boys enrolled in grades 6 & 7 with a plan to add an 8th grade class in the 2010 academic school year. Our goal is to expand our Academy through high school and offer a demanding, challenging curriculum suited to our students.
We are seeking a qualified, energetic, engaged and creative individual as a Math and Science Teacher at The Fugees Academy who will help the kids realize their full potential to succeed academically.
